“I’ll speak to the Man Upstairs”

I read a quote that stated the gospel is confrontational because the truth challenges us. Today’s post is one that might challenge us a bit. Please allow me to be blunt, but understand I am writing this with love. Let me start with the Word of God.

Revelation 15:4 states:

“Who will not fear, O Lord, and glorify Your name?

For You alone are holy;

For all the nations will come and worship before You,

For Your righteous acts have been revealed.”

How many times have you approached someone in conversation to tell them about the gospel and heard them say; “I’m good with the man upstairs” or “my life is sorted with the man upstairs”?

Do you think that people who make statements like these really have a concept of who God is and is it even vaguely possible that they have an intimate relationship with the living God? Very often you will also find that the same people, upon further enquiry, will justify that they are going to heaven because they do so much good work. Or they said the sinner’s prayer back in the day. And now they are “good to go”.

It is heart-breaking, as the God we serve is Holy. We cannot just approach His throne because we are sinners. It is only through grace, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ that we have access to the Throne of thrones. That means we should never lose our awe and respect for the almighty God.

This brings me to another point. It became common practice to use God’s name or the name of Jesus as a swear word or just as a filler in conversation. Is that not exactly what the 3rd commandment forbids?

The question is, if we cannot respect God, how can we respect any other authority? How do we use the name of the King of kings, the One we love with all our heart and souls and being in vain? I cannot stress enough the importance of respect for God. The creator of everything, the God who holds the future in His hands, who, numbered the hairs on your head. The God who is bigger than our wildest imagination and who loved us so much that He gave is only Son as a sacrifice for our sin.

I think it is time we get back to basics. We need to understand who God is and live for Him 100%. There is nothing complicated about the gospel. But we need to realise, we cannot play with God. He is the same yesterday, today and tomorrow. So when you tell someone about God, what do you say?

Let me help, here are some of the attributes of the God we serve:

  • God Is Infinite – He is Self-Existing, Without Origin
  • God Is Immutable – He Never Changes
  • God Is Self-Sufficient – He Has No Needs
  • God is Omnipotent – He Is All Powerful
  • God Is Omniscient – He Is All-Knowing
  • God Is Omnipresent – He Is Always Everywhere
  • God Is Wise – He Is Full of Perfect, Unchanging Wisdom
  • God Is Faithful – He Is Infinitely, Unchangingly True
  • God Is Good – He Is Infinitely, Unchangingly Kind and Full of Good Will
  • God Is Just – He Is Infinitely, Unchangeably Right and Perfect in All He Does
  • God Is Merciful – He is Infinitely, Unchangeably Compassionate and Kind
  • God Is Gracious – God Is Infinitely Inclined to Spare the Guilty
  • God Is Loving – God Infinitely, Unchangingly Loves Us
  • God Is Holy – He is Infinitely, Unchangingly Perfect
  • God Is Glorious – He is Infinitely Beautiful and Great

Please spend some time meditating on these attributes of God.

So, to finish, I will leave you with God’s word in Hebrews 12: 28-29:

Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom which cannot be shaken, let us have grace, by which we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear. 29For our God is a consuming fire.

God Bless
